Crossing Over: 'Daily Show,' 'Colbert' Stream On Hulu

In a move likely to anger cable operators, Hulu.com will begin streaming full episodes of Comedy Central's calling cards. "The Daily Show" and "Colbert Report" will now be available on the site, which is dedicated to bringing the TV to the Internet, where it has a slew of shows available on-demand.

The move comes only days after Glenn Britt, the chief of Time Warner Cable, the nation's second-largest MSO, suggested that networks' continued aggressiveness at making shows available free on the Web is not something his company (or the cable industry) fully endorses.

The Interactive Advertising Bureau is stepping up its campaign against a pending New York law that would regulate online advertising.

Best Practices In Short-Form Video Advertising

The new guidelines for online video ads published by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) are an important foundation that those of us in both the online video and advertising industries can build upon as we seek to turn the viral video phenomena into a powerful marketing vehicle. But these standards are only a first--and relatively small--step in the right direction towards our shared success.

That shared success will come from shifting loyalty from the traditional standard bearer of brand advertising--television--to the new kid on the block--online video and social media. It will depend on our mutual ability to create content and campaigns designed for the short-form video environment and an interactive medium. In order to realize this opportunity, marketers must first embrace the power of online video; and second, we need to get serious about creating and implementing best practices for maximizing advertising effectiveness.

Microsoft Launches Mobile Display Ads

Microsoft on Tuesday began letting advertisers display banner ads to mobile users of Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Hotmail, following other companies already supporting mobile banner ads.

Mobile users in France, Spain, the U.K. and the U.S. will see the banner ads when using the Microsoft services.

Google made a similar announcement in April, inviting AdWords advertisers to display banner ads instead of only text on mobile phones. Yahoo, AdMob and Third Screen, which is now owned by AOL, are among other companies that also display banner ads on mobile phones

Cross-Platform Ad Strategies: The Good, The Bad And The Unmeasured

In the fragmented media landscape, cross-platform campaigns have become one of the go-to strategies in an advertiser's arsenal--particularly when it comes to reaching the 18-34 demographic. But as panelists at Digital Hollywood noted on Tuesday, those plans--including branded entertainment deals, in- and around-game ads, and mobile video promotions--still suffer from a lack of standardized performance metrics and clear return on investment.

Google Launches Mobile Banner Ads

Google joined a handful of other companies by announcing that it is delivering mobile banner ads.

Companies that use Google's AdWords to advertise online now have the option of displaying a banner ad on cell phones instead of simple text. Google includes a text line under each banner identifying it as an advertisement. Clicking on the ad opens a mobile Web page for the advertisement.

A number of other companies already display banner ads on mobile Web pages. Yahoo, AdMob and Third Screen, which is now owned by AOL, are among companies that display banner ads for advertisers. Microsoft displays banner ads on some of its mobile Web pages, such as MSNBC and other MSN mobile Web pages. Read on...

Coca Cola Creates a new Facebook App

We’ve seen some pretty interesting advertising campaigns that utilize Facebook’s platform for integrated applications, such as Bob Dylan’s. Most of them have been pretty cool, even in their blatant attempts to get users to spread a brand’s name around to their friends. Coca-Cola’s latest, however, seems like it could be fun.

Bad To Worse: Newspaper Revenues Down 7.9% in 2007, Online Growth Slows

TOTAL NEWSPAPER REVENUES TUMBLED TO $45.37 billion in 2007--down 7.9% compared to 2006, according to a year-end summary released by the Newspaper Association of America. Within the total revenue figure, online revenue grew 18.8%, to $3.16 billion--but failed to offset a much larger drop in print revenues, down 9.4% to $42.2 billion.

The 2007 figures confirm that the revenue decline at newspapers accelerated from 2006 to 2007. In 2006, total revenues declined a more modest 0.32%, as well as from quarter to quarter within 2007. Over the course of last year, the slide turned into a free fall with a 4.8% drop in the first quarter, followed by 8.6% in the second, 7.4% in the third, and 10.3% in the fourth. More

Maybe Advertising In Social Media Should Be An Oxymoron

I’m still mulling a social networking panel I saw last week at Ogilvy’s Verge Summit in New York. So, rather than keep mulling it within the limited confines of my brain, I’ve decided to share what I heard on that panel with the Social Media Insider community — people who, I’ve noticed, comment on just about everything, and intelligently, too.
